Winona honors its history as the ancestral home of the Dakota tribe each fall with the Great Dakota Gathering, an event that invites tribal members to come to Winona for several days to share their stories, their beliefs, and their rich cultural heritage.
A pow-wow brings dancers in their finest regalia, traditional moccasin games bring Dakota teams, and community meals bring together people who seek to understand and learn from each other. The event takes place in Unity Park, a space created at the base of Sugar Loaf bluff using the region’s signature limestone rock that was dedicated to Winona’s Dakota heritage by the city.
Dates for 2018 have not been announced, though the event typically takes place each September. Learn more about the event from the Great Dakota Gathering website, and stay tuned here for announcements about the 2018 event.
